About the Periphery
The Periférica Film Festival, a bold initiative by producers and filmmakers from Camaragibe, Pernambuco, aims to promote audiovisual production in the city, state, and country, with a special focus on productions that emerge from the peripheries of the system. The festival seeks to give visibility to marginalized spaces and bodies, also connecting with productions from the Global South. The third edition of Periférica, held online in 2021, screened 62 short films from 18 Brazilian states and four Latin American countries, in addition to promoting workshops and debates. The program included screenings dedicated to films by black, indigenous, LGBTQAI+, and women filmmakers, demonstrating a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. The festival also seeks to educate audiences and create a new critical perception of different cultures.
Periférica acts as an agent of cultural, social and economic transformation, giving voice and visibility to independent productions that often do not find space in traditional circuits. By doing so, the show generates employment and income directly and indirectly, positively impacting the lives of the people and communities involved. The initiative seeks to include the peripheries in the production networks in a fair and leading way.
The Mostra Periférica de Cinema is a concrete example of how cultural initiatives can catalyze local development, offering opportunities for talents from the outskirts of cities to connect with the audiovisual world and generate an impact in their communities.
